Genesis 1:7 (AMP)
So God made the expanse [of sky], and separated the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so.
“Made”, “Firmament”, and “Waters” #
English Word | Hebrew | Root Meaning | Spiritual Insight |
---|---|---|---|
Made | עָשָׂה (ʿāśāh) | To fashion, accomplish | God actively forms the “in-between” realm |
Firmament | רָקִיעַ (rāqîaʿ) | Stretched-out expanse | Symbol of Christ crucified, stretched between heaven and earth |
Waters | מַיִם (mayim) | Chaotic masses, people, nations | Two distinct orders: heavenly and earthly realms |
“The firmament is Christ crucified—stretched between heaven and earth to divide the old and the new.”
This firmament is not a ceiling; it is a dividing work, a separation that establishes order from confusion—spirit from soul, heavenly from earthly.
Christ as the Firmament #
Christ Himself is the true and living firmament. His cross forms the spiritual division between the waters above (Spirit-led life) and the waters below (soulish, earthly life).
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up…”
— John 3:14, AMP
On the cross, Christ was stretched out, just as rāqîaʿ means, forming the veil between the old man and the new.
Symbol in Genesis | Fulfilment in Christ |
---|---|
Firmament stretched | Christ crucified, lifted between heaven and earth |
Separates waters | Divides spirit and soul in us |
“Made” by God | Christ, fashioned as the last Adam |
The Two Waters #
Water in Scripture symbolises multitudes, peoples, and spiritual realms.
“The waters which you saw… are peoples and multitudes and nations…”
— Revelation 17:15, AMP
Thus, the waters above represent a heavenly order—those born from above, while the waters below point to the Adamic realm—earth-bound souls ruled by the carnal mind.
Waters Above the Firmament | Waters Below the Firmament |
---|---|
Spirit realm (John 3:6) | Soul realm (1 Corinthians 2:14) |
Life in Christ | Life in Adam |
Heaven-born elect | Earth-bound multitudes |
Governed by the Lamb | Governed by fallen nature |
Only the firmament (Christ) can divide these. Without Him, all is chaos and mixture.
The Work of Division Within #
“Waters above are those raised in Christ; waters below remain bound to Adam’s nature.”
This verse also applies inwardly. Christ, as the living Word, divides between spirit and soul:
“For the word of God is living… piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit…”
— Hebrews 4:12, AMP
This internal dividing work is crucial for spiritual maturity. Many believers walk as a mixture—part flesh, part spirit. But when the firmament is formed in us, clarity comes. We discern by the Spirit, not by emotions, intellect, or human understanding.
The Heavenly Pattern: Day Two Unfinished #
Notably, Day Two is the only day in Genesis where God did not say “it was good”.
Why?
Because division had started, but completion had not yet come. Division is painful, necessary, but not the end. Christ must increase, and the soul must decrease (John 3:30). Until the inner waters are fully separated, the journey remains incomplete.
Day | Declaration | Reason |
---|---|---|
Day 1 | “It was good” | Light (Christ) revealed |
Day 2 | (no “good”) | Division began but was not perfected |
Day 3 | “It was good” | Division began but not perfected |

Shaliach.
