Genesis 1:8 | Firmament and Heaven

3 min read

“God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day.”
Genesis 1:8 (AMP)

Most readers hurry past this verse without realising its profound spiritual truth. Yet in the Spirit, even these words whisper of Christ, His mediation, the separation of realms, and the unfolding mystery of reconciliation.

“The firmament is not merely sky—it is Christ as the dividing line between flesh and Spirit.”

Unveiling the Word: Firmament and Heaven #

The Hebrew word for firmament is רָקִ֫יעַ (raqia), meaning an expanse, a stretched-out covering, or a vault—a divider between two waters (Genesis 1:6–7). But this is more than atmospheric detail—it is a spiritual type.

The firmament points to a necessary separation between the waters above (spiritual, heavenly life) and the waters below (earthly, soulish existence).

Above this expanse is called Heaven—the Hebrew word שָׁמַיִם (shamayim), meaning “the heights, the sky, the dwelling of God”. In the Greek Septuagint, this is οὐρανός (ouranos), which is later used for both the sky and the spiritual heavenly realm.

Christ Hidden Here #

Christ Himself is this dividing line—the one Mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5), between flesh and Spirit, between old creation and new. As the firmament separated two realms, so also the cross of Christ separates the old Adamic life from the new heavenly life (Romans 6:6).

Why Was ‘It Was Good’ Missing on Day Two? #

Notice: Genesis 1:8 lacks God’s declaration: “It was good”—unlike every other day.

“Day Two lacked ‘good’ because the separation waits for its final fulfilment in Christ’s reconciliation of all things.”

Why?

Many trusted teachers reveal this hidden truth:
Separation in itself is unfinished. Until the two realms are reconciled in Christ (Ephesians 1:10), separation remains incomplete.

“With regard to the fulfilment of the times [that is, the end of history, the climax of the ages]—to bring all things together in Christ, both things in the heavens and things on the earth.”
Ephesians 1:10 (AMP)

In Revelation 21:1–3, this separation is removed—the new heaven and new earth become one, and the dwelling of God is with man forever.

Firmament: A Pattern of Your Spiritual Life #

This verse is not about the sky alone—it is the pattern of your inner life in Christ.

Waters AboveClouds, vapourDivine truths, heavenly life (John 7:38)

Heaven (Shamayim)Sky, atmosphereHeavenly realm in the Spirit (Ephesians 2:6)
No “Good”Separation unfinishedAwaiting union in Christ—the One who reconciles all (Colossians 1:20)

As Christ is formed in you, the “waters below” (carnal life) are subdued, and the “waters above” (spiritual life) flow freely.

This Pattern is Fulfilled in Christ Alone #

This is only true if Christ lives in you, the Spirit leads you, and you are dead to Adam, dead to the world and flesh, but alive in God through Christ (Galatians 2:20; Romans 6:11). Otherwise, this remains a distant history of creation, not your present inward reality.

Christ is your firmament—your separation from the old and your bridge into the new.

In Christ,
Shaliach.
