LEADER AND MENTOR #
SCRIPTURE READING — 2 TIMOTHY 2:1-9 #
There is an ancient proverb that says something like this concerning mentorship and leadership: “I do, you watch; I do, you help; You do, I help; You do, I watch.”
Jesus instructed His disciples in such a manner, and His disciples then taught others the things they had learned from Jesus. The learner commits to learning from a master, and after they have gained enough experience, they can pass on their knowledge to other people.
2 Timothy 2:1-2 — So you, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And what you heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will be competent to teach others as well.
Paul encourages Timothy to remember his instruction and to transmit it to trustworthy individuals who may educate others in the passage that we have selected for our devotion today. Through the grace that He has given us, God wants to have a relationship with us in Christ, to fill us with His Holy Spirit, and to demonstrate to us how to live our lives to the fullest so that we might pass on all of this to other people. God desires us to serve as His disciples and sons.
C.S. Lewis’s “The Screwtape Letters” has a striking visual that exemplifies this point quite effectively. This peculiar book is written from the point of view of a demon, also known as the devil, attempting to explain the grand design God has for the human race.
The demon states, “One must face the fact that all the talk about [God’s] love for men, and His service being perfect freedom, is not (as one would gladly believe) mere propaganda, but an appalling truth.” “[God] genuinely does wish to populate the world with a lot of nasty tiny duplicates of Himself”
PRAYER #
Lord Jesus, thank you for being the perfect example of what it is to live. Make us the learners you need so that we may teach others the path to a rich life with you and share it with others. Amen.
