God’s Design for Lifelong Companionship in Marriage

Scripture Reading — Genesis 2:15-18 #

A group of famous women, on an episode of a famous talk show, had joined an “ex-wives club” not long ago. There was no difference in their views on marriage, even though most of them had been married more than once. The anchor replied, “If marriage isn’t good, why try it again or for a third time?”

Genesis 2:18 — The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a companion for him who corresponds to him.”

My best understanding is that Genesis has some answers to that question. In that verse, God says, “It is not good for the man to be alone.”

Adam felt alone when the woman wasn’t around. Because of this, God chose to make himself whole again by bringing Eve from his rib. God gave Adam a companion for life so that he could have a deep, personal and meaningful relationship with that person for all of his days.

Through the design of marriage, God gives us a partner to share all the things that life has to offer. Having a mate means having someone who can understand us and will be there for us through every step of the process.

Nurturing a Lifelong Relationship: The Gift of Marriage #

Marriage is meant to give us a person who can complete us and with whom we can share our deepest joys, sorrows, and hopes. The gift that marriage is supposed to give us is this. Also, God wanted it to be a relationship that would last your whole life.

If you’re thinking about getting married, you should find someone who can be that kind of friend for the rest of your life. Furthermore, if you are married, it is important to carefully grow your deep relationship with the person God gave you.

Prayer #

Heavenly Father,
You declared, “It is not good for man to be alone; I will make a helper suitable for him” [Genesis 2:18]. We thank You for giving us each other. You are wise because You put us together to be companions in this life. Your Word says that as husband and wife, we should support, lift, and encourage each other in love and understanding.

We pray that Your healing kindness will reach those whose relationships are in trouble and bring healing, peace, and power to their union. Help us grow in the love and togetherness that You have planned for us. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
