Genesis 1:6 | Separation and Division

3 min read

Genesis 1:6 (AMP) #

“And God said, ‘Let there be an expanse [of the sky] in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters below from the waters above.’”

Revelation #

ElementSpiritual Significance
“God said”God’s Word is the creative and dividing force — His voice always separates light from dark.
“Let there be an expanse”Also translated firmament (KJV) — a divine separation, an ordained space between realms.
“In the midst of the waters”Waters represent realms — natural and spiritual, soulish and divine.
“Let it separate”Separation = judgement. Before forming anything, God divides and distinguishes.

“Expanse” — Hebrew raqiaʿ (רָקִ֫יעַ) #

Defined as a spreading out, beaten plate, or firmament, from the root raqaʿ — “to spread, hammer, stamp out.”

English WordHebrewMeaning
ExpanseraqiaʿA stretched firmament or veil
Rootraqaʿ (רָקַע)To beat out, spread like hammered metal

The idea is of a veil or sheet stretched between two domains — heaven and earth, spirit and soul.

“The Cross is the only expanse — the eternal veil stretched between earth and Spirit.”

The Cross as the True Expanse #

The Cross of Christ is the fulfilment of the expanse. It is:

  • The separation point — between the Adamic man and the New Man in Christ.
  • The unifying point — heaven met earth in His body.
  • The judgment of both realms — flesh condemned, spirit raised.

There is no natural bridge between the spiritual and earthly. No ladder of morality, law, or religion can span the divide.

“No one has ascended into heaven except He who came down…” (John 3:13, ESV)

Only Christ — by the Cross — divides and reconciles.

“He Himself is our peace… who broke down the dividing wall.” (Ephesians 2:14–16, AMP)

“God does not mix the realms — He divides, then reconciles in Christ alone.”

The expanse divides these waters — showing there is no mixture in God’s order.
Christ did not come to repair the old — He introduced the new by separation.

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old has passed away…” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Christ the Veil, Christ the Door #

Hebrews says:

“…through the veil, that is, through His flesh…” (Hebrews 10:20, ESV)
“There is one Mediator… the Man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:5)

He is the only expanse that:

  • Divides soul from spirit (Heb. 4:12),
  • Bridges God and man (John 14:6),
  • And carries us into the heavens (Eph. 2:6).

The Work of Division #

Separation is the first phase of sanctification.
Before God forms or fills, He divides. Before fruit, there must be separation.

“Come out from among them, and be separate…” (2 Corinthians 6:17)

This pattern appears in:

“The firmament in Genesis is fulfilled in Christ, who separates and unites by His Cross.”

  • Genesis 1: dividing light/dark, waters/waters
  • Exodus: dividing Egypt from Israel
  • The Cross: dividing old creation from new

God’s work is not mingling, but cutting, dividing, circumcising — to bring forth a holy race.

Christ-Centred #

Genesis 1:6 is not about clouds and sky alone — it’s a prophetic picture:

  • Christ is the expanse, the Cross, the veil, the door.
  • He separates the old man from the new, the soulish realm from Spirit.
  • He alone can reconcile what was eternally divided.

All this is only when Christ is in you, you are moved by the Holy Spirit, you are dead to the world, dead to Adam and the flesh, but alive in Christ and the Spirit.

In Christ,
Shaliach.
