Bible Reading: Acts 10:23-48 #
Key Verse:
Acts 10:47 — “No one can withhold the water for these people to be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?”
After receiving a new way of thinking about people of other nations in a vision, Peter was commanded by the Lord to speak to a Roman centurion. He was a disciple of our Lord and shared the gospel of Jesus with the centurion’s family and close friends.
He did this because he had the opportunity to meet them. Peter explained that Jesus – the Son of God came to earth to save all from sin and death, all who would believe in him. He came to earth to atone for all of our sins by sacrificing himself on a cross. After his death, he resurrected from the dead and is Lord over all creation.
The Holy Spirit’s Outpouring on the Gentiles #
God began doing something new after Pentecost which ushered in the age of the Holy Spirit and the Kingdom.
As Peter was preaching, the Holy Spirit suddenly “came on all those who had heard the message.” The Jewish believers were surprised by this. Were even the Gentiles subject to God’s acceptance? Incredible!
In any case, “the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out” when it came to them. On the other hand, nothing was considered a barrier to their being baptised with water.
Peter, like other Jewish believers, had avoided contact with Gentiles until now. However, he now welcomed individuals from different nations and ethnicities into the church, which was the renewed family of Christ.
Conclusion #
Like Peter, we are called to break down walls based on race, culture, and experience. God’s love and the word that through Christ we can be saved are for everyone. When the Holy Spirit came down on the Gentiles, it reminded us that everyone is welcome in God’s family and that we should share the gospel with everyone.
