SCRIPTURE READING — JOHN 1:1-14 #
It is a straightforward statement, “The Word became flesh,” which means that the Word took on human form and became just like any one of us. That seems like a straightforward question until we find out who the Word is. After that, it just blows your mind completely.
John provides the missing information for us. He begins with the eternal existence of the Word by stating, “In the beginning was the Word.” Next, he connects the eternal Word with God by stating, “The Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Finally, John connects the divine Word to creation by stating, “Through him, all things were made.” But this is not all that he says. The Word is also the source of all human flourishing; the Bible says, “In him was life, and that life was the light of all people.” Additionally, the Word is unconquerable; the Bible says, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not conquered it.”
John 1:1-5 — In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was fully God. The Word was with God in the beginning. All things were created by him, and apart from him not one thing was created that has been created. In him was life, and the life was the light of mankind. And the light shines on in the darkness, but the darkness has not mastered it.
This whole thing is a huge deal. And this wondrous and magnificent Word takes the form of Jesus. The eternal, all-powerful Creator of all things is shown to be no different from any of us. There is nothing straightforward about it at all. And there is still a lot of confusion about it.
But let me show you something that will blow your mind. When the Word takes on flesh, God’s grandeur is seen in a manner that was not possible before: “The Word became flesh.” . . . We have seen his majesty. . . Imagine for a moment that a human being is filled to the brim with the splendour of God. How very amazing is it!
John 1:14 — Now the Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We saw his glory – the glory of the one and only, full of grace and truth, who came from the Father.

Lord, even though you are the Word of God, you know us inwardly. That is incredible. Lord, enlighten our understanding of what it is to be a spiritual person in Christ. Amen.
