When I preach the gospel and share Christ, people from other religions also share from their books. How should I respond?
— An Ardent Seeker of Truth
It Can Feel Like a Debate… But It’s Not One #
When someone from another religion starts quoting their sacred texts, it might feel like you’ve stepped into a contest: “My book vs. your book.”
But the gospel doesn’t need to be defended like a textbook. The gospel is not just information—it is revelation.
You are not presenting a religion. You are revealing a Person.
We Preach Christ—Not a System #
Paul said clearly:
“For I decided to know nothing [that is, to forego philosophical or theological discussions regarding inconsequential things and opinions] among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.”
— 1 Corinthians 2:2 AMP
The strength of our witness is not in comparing scriptures, but in revealing Christ—His life, His love, His cross, His resurrection, and His Spirit in us.
So What Do You Do When They Quote Their Books? #
First, don’t be defensive. Honour the fact that they are seeking the truth. But gently bring them back to Jesus.
You can say something like: “I hear what you’re saying. But can I share what Jesus has done in me?”
Their book may contain ideas and values. But only Christ gives life.
“The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance [to the full, till it overflows].” — John 10:10 AMP
Truth Isn’t Just Taught—It’s Revealed #
People are not argued into the kingdom. They are drawn by the Spirit and awakened by revelation.
Jesus told Peter:
“Blessed [happy, spiritually secure, favoured by God] are you, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood [mortal man] did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.”
— Matthew 16:17 AMP
So when you preach, don’t just share facts. Share from the Spirit. Let your life bear witness. Christ in you is the strongest message they’ll ever see.
Final Word: Stay Focused #
Let them talk. Be gracious. But always bring it back to this: “What do you think about Jesus?” (see Matthew 22:42)
Don’t be moved by comparison. You’re not sharing a better religion. You’re sharing the only life.
And when they meet Him, they won’t need an argument.
In Christ,
Shaliach.
