Does the Abrahamic Covenant guarantee material wealth for New Covenant believers?

1 min read

Question:
Hello Pastor Shaliach, I’ve heard some say that since we are Abraham’s seed through Christ, we are entitled to his material blessings too. Does the Abrahamic Covenant promise wealth to us as New Covenant believers?
Neha R, Navi Mumbai

Answer:
Hi Neha, great question — and a very common one. The short answer is no, the Abrahamic Covenant does not guarantee material wealth to New Covenant believers.

Yes, Galatians 3:29 (AMP) says: “And if you belong to Christ [if you are in Him], then you are Abraham’s descendants, and [spiritual] heirs according to [God’s] promise.”

But what was that promise? Not just land or livestock. God’s promise to Abraham was justification by faith and blessing to all nations through his seed — which is Christ.

Galatians 3:8 — “The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, proclaimed the good news [of the Saviour] to Abraham in advance [with this promise], saying, ‘In you shall all the nations be blessed.’”

The Hebrew word for covenant is berith (בְּרִית), and it always involves relationship, not mere reward. Abraham was materially blessed, yes — but he also lived as a sojourner, and many of his blessings came with trials.

The New Covenant blessing through Abraham is righteousness by faith (Romans 4:13), not wealth by inheritance. Paul warns in 1 Timothy 6:5–6 (AMP) about false teachers who imagine that “godliness is a source of profit” — and reminds us that “godliness is a source of great gain when accompanied by contentment.”

So, while God may choose to bless some materially, there is no covenantal guarantee of wealth for every believer in Christ. The true inheritance is spiritual — life in the Spirit, not luxury life.

In Christ,
Shaliach
