Many Expressions | Operations, Administrations and Gifts

4 min read

In the Body of Christ, the Holy Spirit never contradicts Himself. Though He moves in diverse ways, He always points to Christ. There are different gifts, ministries, and operations, yet each one flows from the same Spirit, the same Lord, and the same God.

“Now there are [distinctive] varieties of spiritual gifts, but it is the same Spirit.
And there are varieties of ministries, but the same Lord.
And there are varieties of operations, but it is the same God who works all things in all persons.”
1 Corinthians 12:4–6, AMP

Understanding the Three Realms #

TypeGreek WordEnglish WordDescription
Giftscharismata (χαρίσματα)Spiritual giftsSupernatural abilities by grace
Ministriesdiakonia (διακονία)Services/ministriesAppointed spiritual functions
Operationsenergemata (ἐνεργήματα)Workings/energisingsDivine effect and outcome

Let us examine each one in light of Scripture and spiritual understanding.

“Paul functioned as apostle, preacher, and teacher—not by ambition, but by grace.”

1. Spiritual Gifts (Charismata) #

These are spirit-born abilities granted by grace, not effort. Charismata comes from charis, meaning unearned favour. These gifts are not earned, inherited, or taught—they are given.

“But to each one is given the manifestation of the [Holy] Spirit for the common good.”
1 Corinthians 12:7, AMP

Examples: #

  • Word of wisdom
  • Word of knowledge
  • Faith
  • Healings
  • Miracles
  • Prophecy
  • Discerning of spirits
  • Tongues
  • Interpretation of tongues

These are manifestations, not badges of honour. One may operate in a gift, and yet not abide in Christ. It is not gifts but fruit that reveal true union.

2. Ministries (Diakonia) #

These are appointed spiritual offices or callings. While gifts are distributed to all as the Spirit wills, ministries are specific functions given for the equipping and building of the Body.

“And He Himself appointed some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, some as pastors and teachers.”
Ephesians 4:11, AMP

“To fully equip and perfect the saints [God’s people] for works of service, to build up the body of Christ.”
Ephesians 4:12, AMP

💠 One Person, Multiple Ministries? #

Yes. A person may function in more than one ministry role if graced by God. Paul is a prime example:

“For which I was appointed a preacher and an apostle and a teacher [of this good news regarding salvation].”
2 Timothy 1:11, AMP

FunctionRole
ApostleFoundation-layer and builder
PreacherHerald or public proclaimer
TeacherInstructor in doctrine and truth

Paul didn’t appoint himself. These roles were graces, not ambitions. And so it is with any believer—if Christ lives in you, the Spirit may express Himself in multiple dimensions through you, as needed.

“Ministries are appointments, not achievements; gifts are tools, not trophies.”

Modern Examples: #

  • A prophet may also teach, if grace allows.
  • A pastor may evangelise.
  • A believer may operate in healing and prophecy.

But it must be by grace and leading, not by desire or assumption. We must never confuse function with identity.

3. Operations (Energemata) #

These are the divine results—the effect produced when a gift or ministry functions by the Spirit.

“But it is the same God who produces all things in all believers [inspiring, energising, and empowering them].”
1 Corinthians 12:6, AMP

For example:

  • A healing gift may operate in one moment, and the operation is actual physical healing.
  • A teaching ministry may function, and the operation is divine illumination and transformation.

Without the operation, the gift or ministry is just an activity. Only the Spirit gives life.

Harmony in the House #

Let us bring the pieces together:

AspectGiftMinistryOperation

ExampleProphecyProphetConviction & edification
RoleAbilityAppointmentDivine outcome
ResultPower to actRole to serveFruit that remains

This is not hierarchy, but harmony. It is not about rising in levels, but functioning in union with Christ. You may have one gift, multiple gifts, one ministry, or more—as He wills, not as we want.

Distinguishing Gifts of the Spirit vs. Gifts of Christ #

We often blur the distinction between gifts given by the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12) and gifts given by Christ (Ephesians 4). Clarifying this strengthens our understanding:

SourcePassageFocusGiven To
Holy Spirit1 Corinthians 12Manifestations (gifts)Every believer
ChristEphesians 4Ministry roles (people as gifts)The Body (through gifted people)
FatherRomans 12Motivational gifts (graces)Inborn tendencies or callings

This highlights the Godhead’s united but unique role in forming and equipping the Church.

Motivational Gifts (Romans 12) #

Often overlooked are the Romans 12 graces—sometimes called “motivational” or “foundational” gifts. These explain why different believers see and serve differently.

“A person may operate in many roles—but only as Christ expresses Himself through them.”

“Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them…”
Romans 12:6, ESV

Examples: #

  • Prophecy (perception)
  • Serving (helps)
  • Teaching (truth)
  • Exhorting (encouragement)
  • Giving (resource stewardship)
  • Leading (governance)
  • Mercy (compassion)

These are God-wired directions that shape how a believer expresses themselves in ministry and life.

How to Discern Your Grace and Operation? #

A short section can help readers practically discern their grace:

Ask: #

  • What fruit remains when I serve?
  • What comes alive in me when I minister?
  • What do others confirm about my function?
  • What operation results—transformation, healing, or understanding?

A tool like this adds pastoral value for those seeking direction.

The Corporate Body Function #

Emphasise that no function exists in isolation. Each part needs the others.

“The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you.’”
1 Corinthians 12:21, AMP

Warning Against Gift-Idolatry #

Today, many equate spiritual maturity with power gifts. This error must be gently corrected:

“Gifts can function without death to self. But no gift is greater than union with Christ.”

This can serve as a sobering reminder and close your post in the fear of the Lord.

A Word of Caution #

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven… Many will say to Me… ‘Did we not prophesy… and perform many miracles?’ And I will say… ‘I never knew you.’”
Matthew 7:21–23, paraphrased

This proves one can operate in gifts and even ministries, and still be outside of Christ. It is not the gift that proves salvation, but knowing Him and being known by Him.

Purity Before Power #

We must seek intimacy, not just operation. Power can be counterfeited. Purity cannot.

  • Function must flow from the union.
  • Expression must arise from surrender.
  • Gifts and callings must operate under the Headship of Christ.

Yielded Vessels, Not Ambitious Workers #

All this is only when Christ is in you, you are moved by the Spirit, dead to the world, Adam, and the flesh, but alive in God through the Spirit. The Spirit cannot flow through self-will or ambition.

We must discern:

  • What He has given (gifts),
  • Where He has placed us (ministries),
  • And what He is doing through us (operations).

In Christ,
Shaliach.
