Bible Reading — Genesis 1:20-28; Romans 8:19-21 #
Romans 8:19 — For the earnest expectation of the creature waits for the manifestation of the sons of God.
Moses grew up in a world (Egypt) with many stories about how people came to be and their roles. In an old story, some lower gods got fed up working for higher gods and went on strike. Then, one of the smaller gods made people out of clay so they could work for the bigger gods. So people were made to build and take care of homes for the gods (temples) and offer offerings to feed the gods.
What God Wants for People #
God told Moses to tell us who made us and why to clear things up. Genesis 2:7 says that the one true God made people out of dust and breathed life into them.
Genesis 2:7 — And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
God made people in his image.
Genesis 1:26 — And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.
The Fall and Its Consequences #
So people were made out of love, not because we had to or because of a fight, and we came into the world with God’s power. To put it another way, we are God’s children and have the power to rule over and care for all of creation.
Genesis 2:15 — And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
Also, if we followed God’s wise guidance and took care of the world, it would grow and give us plenty.
Jesus and the Hope for Restoration #
But our first parents sinned (Genesis 3), so we don’t follow God’s rules and care for others as he does. Because of this, creation has not grown but has become disorganised, which has made life hard and dangerous.
It’s a good thing Jesus came to lead us back to God by his death, burial and resurrection. And God the Spirit came to teach us how to live for God and serve him in the world until Jesus comes back.
Prayer #
Heavenly Father,
We come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your pardon. We accept that in our frailty, we failed to care for the Earth You so lovingly created. Forgive us for how we have harmed and mistreated the world, Your gift to us.
Lord, teach us to walk in your knowledge. Please help us to display Your care and love in all we do. May we grow to be better stewards of Your creation, honouring You through our actions and decisions. Fill us with Your Spirit so that we might live in a manner that glorifies Your name. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Godwin.
